Roland Hayes correspondence and ephemera, 1927-1942.

Roland Hayes Correspondence and Ephemera contains correspondence sent to Hayes largely between 1932 and 1933. The material is from George Fiske Hammond I, a California aviator who flew Hayes to music engagements around the country, and who also served as Hayes's business manager for a period during the 1930s. Correspondents include Fisk University, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and attorney Hugh Macbeth, as well as admirers, old acquaintances asking for tickets, and various groups requesting concerts. Also included are transcriptions of poetry, a handwritten speech, and photographs of airplanes (including one of Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis).

Roland Hayes (June 3, 1887 – January 1, 1977) was an American lyric tenor and composer. Critics lauded his abilities and linguistic skills demonstrated with songs in French, German and Italian. Earlier African-American concert artists were not recorded because in their day recording companies were only interested in a vaudeville type of singer.
